$2000
to your Favorite College Kid:
Building Future Builders Offers Academic Prize for Creative Minds |
When
you remember your college days, what comes to mind? Leafy quads,
brainy professors, pretty co-eds, goofy mascots, football games … and,
of course, that old college favorite … creative, eye-catching
and prize-winning Logo designs for construction-related non-profit
organizations.
“Well,
if you have never associated college life with creative, eye-catching
and prize-winning Logo designs for construction-related non-profit
organizations before, now’s the time to make that connection.”
Well,
if you have never associated college life with creative, eye-catching
and prize-winning Logo designs for construction-related non-profit
organizations before, now’s the time to make that connection.
Building
Future Builders, a non-profit organization designed to encourage
students to pursue careers in construction, is asking America’s
construction students to design their Logo. The student who submits
the winning entry will be awarded a $2,000
scholarship prize. This
contest is open to students currently in construction management,
engineering, and architecture programs.
Further,
the department whose student submits the winning entry will receive
a $1000 grant for its program.
Building
Future Builders has announced its RFL (Request
for Logos) in order
to introduce itself to construction, engineering, and architecture
programs around the country. Also, by making an immediate contribution
of $2,000 to the winning student, Building Future Builders wants
to show precisely what their foundation is all about: providing
opportunities for students and encouraging them to pursue a career.
The
Director of Building Future Builders, Chuck Andrews, remarked “We
are eager to get started and believe this contest is an exciting
way to make an immediate contribution to the students we want to
serve. The need is looming and our future as an industry demands
action now. This is just a start, but (pun intended) ... all
buildings start with a foundation!”
Students
are encouraged to get a feel for Building Future Builders, their
mission and goals by visiting the website at www.BuildingFutureBuilders.org,
where they can also get more information on the design competition.
If
you remember your college days, you probably know that most students
can use $2000. We encourage you to spread the word through your
organization and contact students you may know through current
employment, past internships and family relationships and let them
know that a prize is out there to be won.

Building
Future Builders Steps into the Breach |
Some
newspapers come up woefully short in trying to adequately announce
compelling news: headlines such as Iraqi Head
Seeks Arms, Farmer
Bill Dies in House, and Police Begin
Campaign to Run Down Jaywalkers had important information to pass along but bungled the job.
So,
when The Construction Industry Newsletter learned that a new not-for-profit
foundation called BUILDING FUTURE BUILDERS had formed, we decided
to run a special edition to announce – carefully and accurately – its
inspiration and objectives.
Building
Future Builders was created in 2006 to help encourage young people
to pursue construction as a profession. The Director of Building
Future Builders, Chuck Andrews, notes, “This is an exciting
time in construction. Start-ups on new projects are growing and
markets are burgeoning, and the professionals in place are great
at what they do. But, the numbers of kids in school who are preparing
to enter construction is alarmingly low. We’re concerned
enough, in fact, to start this foundation. But we also have great
faith in an industry that has helped build this country – literally – into
what it is today.”
Those
ideals echo the philosophy espoused at Kimmel & Associates,
the nation’s largest construction executive search firm,
whose seed money was the catalyst behind the formation of Building
Future Builders.
Andrews
continues: “Building Future Builders may be a newcomer to
the world of educational foundations, but our plans are ambitious,
and we’re going to move fast. Our initiatives include a high
school Construction Academy Program, elementary and junior high
school Construction Awareness Programs, an Internship Program,
a Learning Center, and a university-level Construction Studies
Scholarship Program. A lot of work needs to be done … and
we intend to do it. We’re looking to affect change quickly,
but also permanently.”
Those
are high-minded words, but those involved at BFB believe them.
Indeed, their Mission Statement reads “Our purpose is to
provide and enhance opportunities for future generations of construction
professionals in a manner that honors God.” If Building Future
Builders can attain this high ideal, then the future generation
of builders will be as numerous and accomplished as the current.

The
Kimmel Scholarship in Construction Application Deadline Nears:
Offers $1000 to Students in Construction Nationwide |
In
2004, the leadership at Kimmel & Associates instituted the
Kimmel Scholarship for Students in Construction as a means to encourage
college students to consider construction as a career. Since the
Fall 2004 semester, Kimmel & Associates, the leading executive
search firm in the construction industry, has given 138 scholarships
to students at 64 different colleges and universities located in
31 states, from Washington to Florida and from Massachusetts to
California.
Says
Charlie Kimmel, the Chief Operating Officer at Kimmel & Associates, “we
want to serve our clients every way we can, and helping attract young
people to construction, and supporting their efforts once they’re
preparing for construction while in college, seemed like a great
way to commit to a healthy future for the industry.”
Kimmel & Associates
endows Building Future Builders (see previous articles for more on
Building Future Builders) to administer the Kimmel Scholarship in
Construction, cementing another link between the executive search
firm and its efforts to aid students in construction.
Building
Future Builders is currently accepting applications for the Spring
2007 semester award and will take them until November 15, 2006. The
application is accessible via either the construction homepage of
www.kimmel.com or www.BuildingFutureBuilders.org and can be completed
online or printed and mailed back in.
As
the number of applicants has increased each semester, the requirements
have become slightly more stringent. An applicant now must have a
construction professional call in a reference for the applicant,
providing a very brief testimonial to the applicant’s talent
and commitment to the construction industry.
Those
who receive this round of the $1000 award will have the money put
directly into their college account in time to defray costs for the
Spring 2007 semester. Please visit the construction
pages of kimmel.com and read further about the Scholarship
for Students in Construction.
We strongly encourage the readers of this Special Edition of the Kimmel Construction
Industry Newsletter to tell college students they know in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture and other construction-related majors to visit kimmel.com and apply.
