Career Resources:
Articles and Advice from the Recruiter
NEGOTIATING YOUR SALARY
When you negotiate compensation, the best advice is to let a professional
recruiter make a deal that is fair to everyone. If, however,
you
are on your own, here are some points to keep in mind. Be realistic.
The local market, the type and size of the company with whom you
are interviewing, and the type of projects they build all determine
what is reasonable. Let them bring up money first. Tell them you
would consider any fair offer. If asked, never lie about your past
earnings. Focus on issues where you can gain some ground. Some
benefits
like 401(k)s and group medical are regulated. Other benefits like
car allowances and bonuses are flexible. Know the difference between
fixed benefits and negotiable perks. Know what you want and act
on it. If the offer is good and the position meets your expectations,
accept it. Don’t feel obligated to think about it. Offers
can be rescinded if not accepted promptly. Make your decision
final.
Career changes mean more than money. Changing your mind after you
have accepted the position is wrong. The best advice: Call Kimmel
& Associates and ask for Linda, our candidate advocate, and
arrange a confidential conversation with an Associate in your area.
